Have you ever had a chance to go to Chinatown in San Francisco? Or, for that matter, Chinatown in New York? You may, of course, find Chinatowns in many other places in the country. Each Chinatown offers places to shop for Chinese food products, and each Chinatown is going to have real Chinese restaurants – when I say, “real,” I mean the real thing, the restaurant that the Chinese people themselves go to for their lunches or dinner.
There are quite a few supermarkets that cater to Chinese people, but these stores may also be popular with others as well. Take, for example, Far East Supermarket in Chinatown, LA. A lot of customers who frequent this particular place praise it for its cleanliness and for the tremendous selection of vegetables, all of which appear to be very fresh. If you want to buy things that you may wish to stir fry, this is the store for you.
There is the 99 Ranch Market, also located in Los Angeles. This particular store has not been around that long. It was opened in the 1980s, but by today, it’s one of the best places in L.A. for the specialty items that you’d associate with a great Asian market. Here, you are also going to find a whole lot of recipes. And they are divided according to the main ingredients. The beef recipes include such things as beef with bitter melon or satay beef. Alternatively, do you fancy pineapple chicken wings? Or perhaps duck with sweet bean paste?
Dynasty Supermarket in New York City offers you Chinese as well as Japanese and Filipino items. Here, you are going to find great fresh produce and fresh meats as well as a friendly service with competitive prices. If you wish to move on to Chinatown in the city, you can do so. Try Peking Duck House there.
While you are still in Chinatown, New York, try Kam Man Food Products, Inc., located on Canal Street. This is a Chinese supermarket that has all the special Chinese food products that you’d expect to find in a great Chinese store, and it also carried a lot of Chinese teas for your pleasure.
Other great Chinese supermarkets in Chinatown, New York, are Po Wing Hong Food Market or Ten Ren Tea and Ginseng Company. Any Chinatown in any great American city is going to the right place for you to locate a great Chinese supermarket.
When you find yourself in one of these places and are new to Chinese or Asian markets, you may find things a bit strange. Live fish in big tanks that resemble giant aquariums. Perhaps you’ll be struck by some strange smells – which may or may not find you as unpleasant, but will certainly seem unusual. That’s because these supermarkets carry a lot of specialty items that you may not be used to. Unless, of course, you happen to be Chinese yourself. In any event, shopping for things you want to cook up quickly in a wok, you need to go to a good Chinese supermarket. They’ll have what you need.
