USA Supermarkets

There are now thousands of USA supermarkets serving millions of Americans. Studies show that shoppers have a weekly spending of $99.90 on groceries in 2010, representing an increase of 1.5% over the figures of 2009, and it is expected that the figure will continue to increase. The most important factors responsible for the choice of a favorite supermarket are price (75%); fruits and vegetables of high-quality (73%); and money-saving specials or items on sale (67%).

There are many things which have been taking place in the food industry for some years. These are some of them:

Many USA supermarkets are introducing low carbohydrate/cholesterol/added-sugar foods. For instance, cane sugar has taken the place of syrup as the major ingredient used in some drinks, while the calories and fats contents in ice cream have been greatly reduced. The need to lose weight has brought about the development of different dietary foods by major companies like Unilever, Kraft, and Danone, adding certain fibres to delay digestion and make the food more filling. Many supermarkets use all these features when advertising their products, as a way to have more sales.

Americans now prefer to go for organic food in place of the ones processed with harsh chemicals, and many USA supermarkets are taking advantage of that. Organic food is the type of food produced or grown without using pesticides, chemical synthetic fertilizers and preservatives and which have nothing to do with genetic engineering. Official definitions differ from country to country, but may require a high standard of growing practices, processing, storage, distribution and management. Organic food includes different types of products like meat, wine, cheese, spices, canned goods, nuts, etc. According to a report from the US Organic Trade Association, the average annual rate of growth the sales of organic food increased by more than 25%, and reaching US$36 billion in 2010. The rate of penetration of organic food was around 6.2% of total food sales made by USA supermarkets.

The demand for better shopping convenience and more diversified food tastes has been making many USA supermarkets to continually change their business strategies. For instance, many Americans now want one-stop shopping, driving hundreds of grocery stores to expand the number of sales departments, increase product variety and more of consumer services. This restructuring in the food business has called the creation of new departments and a broader range of workers to staff them, like the fresh fish and prepared food departments and deli counters which make some other departments to be completely wiped out because their style did not meet current consumer behavior. More USA supermarkets are also expected to develop different niches to become more profitable, and the mix of workers in such supermarkets will definitely be adjusted to reflect new buying habits of consumers, and the changing product focus.

Stiff competition will continue to characterize the industry in which USA supermarkets operate. Many changes have taken place and will continue to do so, especially at the grocery level. For instance, in 2010, the major U.S. food retailers (Wal-Mart, The Kroger, Albertson’s, Safeway, Costco, Ahold USA, Sam’s Club, Publix, Delhaize America and H.E. Butt) had sales of more than $650 million in 2010, accounting for more than 70% of the total market share. Wal-Mart now has about 30% of all the grocery products sold in the U.S.

Tesco Online

Nearly 100 years in existence (founded in 1919), Tesco is a large chain of stores – supermarkets plus other stores. It’s headquartered in its native U.K, but by now it has stores in 14 countries, across Asia and America – in addition to its many outlets in the U.K. alone. The store has an online presence as well, as do a lot of stores around the world. And here you can shop for any number of things, but perhaps you’d start with groceries.

In the grocery areas alone you’ll find the usual: fresh foods (fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy), frozen foods, drinks, baby needs, a bakery, too, and some other departments that sell things like household items, for example. The great thing about having an online presence is that, of course, you can do your shopping from your home computer or from your mobile and even get it delivered. For the most part, customers are happy with their home deliveries, though some will leave negative feedback if something or other they ordered either wasn’t delivered or the wrong thing was substituted for it. This sort of complaint is rare, though.

Moving on to other departments on the company’s website, what else can you find Tesco Online? How about checking out the Phone store? Here, you are going to find a whole lot, including photos for all items. And, of course, the deals you can garner. Do you fancy an Orange BlackBerry Curve? You can get a great deal on it here with even £10 for extra credit for calls and text. And this is just one item on a long list. You’ll just have to access the online store and see for yourself.

Do you need something in the line of Home Electricals? Okay, let’s see what you can find here. A Dyson vacuum cleaner? They start at £179.99 – and that’s a bargain. You can save a whopping £100 on a washing machine. But your choices can include anything and everything under the sun, so long as it’s in the Home Electricals division. Coffee makers and toasters, everyday items that even needed for gifts or replacement items now and then. And whatever else you can find here online, you can buy and get delivered to your home, too.

When it comes to Clothing & Jewelry, Tesco Online is once more your friendly store. Whatever the season, you are going to find the right apparel here. And if you are in the market for jewelry, well, say no more. Supposed you want to pop the question. Practice going on one knee first, but then go online with Tesco’s jewels and get that diamond ring that will make your future wife blush and jump for joy. You think your sweetheart would proudly show off her new 18 carat White Gold 1 carat Diamond Solitaire Ring on her finger? Just between us, this would set you back £2,349.99 – but she doesn’t have to know that.

What should be crystal clear by now is that when it comes to online shopping, Tesco Online is a store that has everything you need and things you may not even know about just yet. People like to shop here. And now that these stores are showing up on this side of the Atlantic Ocean – that is, in the United States as well – it doesn’t even matter where you live. You can get what you need, and that’s a promise.

The major tool for competition among the supermarkets in USA is pricing, which means that the lower your price, the more sales you are likely to make. In addition, studies have shown that supermarkets in USA have 15% lower prices than most other food retailers like “mom-and-pop” stores and convenience stores. Most people prefer to buy from supermarkets that are known to offer cheaper products of the same or higher quality found elsewhere.

The industry has perfect competition where each player determines its own price. However, the products are still subjected to government regulations and inspection to ensure that minimum standards are met. For instance, all beef sold by supermarkets in the US is inspected by the government. This is done through a grading system administered by the US Department of Agriculture.

Publix Supermarket

Founded in 1930 and based in Lakeland, Florida, Publix is an American chain that’s numbered 86 on Fortune Magazine’s list of the 100 best companies to work for in 2010. And when a place is a delight to come to in order to work there, you can just imagine what a delight it must be for doing your shopping there. In any case, Publix is a chain that’s up there in good company, such as Kroger or Whole Foods or even the giant Wal-Mart.

So what are going to find at a Publix Supermarket? The place is well-known for its GreenWise Market. What this means is a lot. Today going green is no longer a luxury for the elite. It is what our earth demands if we are going to keep it around in good shape for generations to come. At Publix, GreenWise means, among other things, that whatever is labeled organic here is 100% USDA certified to be what the label claims. From eggs to recycled paper towels and all kinds of fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Going green is the way to go now, and Publix has already gone green with flying colors.

Once you are past the basics – your fruit and vegetables, your meat and dairy, you baked goods, etc., how about moving on to your Publix Wine Guide or your Publix Baby Club? Wine at Publix means many things. For one thing, you have your Monthly Featured Wines – always a place for great bargains. But you’ll also find here Wine 101. And if you are, say, a young couple and still a novice as to what wine to select for those special occasions, here is where you can learn all you need to know about how to read a wine label or how to store and serve the wine you buy.

The Publix Baby Club is obviously also for young couple whose family is likewise young. This store understands your baby’s needs during the crucial first two years of life, so the store abounds in items and advice for you that you can rely on with 100% confidence. You can even get valuable coupons here for the products that you have learned to trust because of their first-rate reputation. And with these coupons, you end up saving money, no small feat for a young family.

Publix Pharmacy for those times when you need medications to get you back to your optimal health is here to serve you as well. There is nothing better than to know that you can trust your prescriptions to the friendly pharmacists on duty here every time you need a prescription filled. But there you can get a lot more for your money. How about flu shots and other types of immunizations? Or even free medicines now and then? These include select antibiotics or meds for people who suffer from diabetes. All you need is your bona fide prescription, and Publix Pharmacy is going to do the rest.

Publix Supermarkets have come a long way since that great year of 1930 when the first store opened up in Florida. Today, one of these stores is a veritable gold mine for the best in groceries and in green items. You will be happy you live within an easy drive of one of these stores. And that’s not something to sneeze at.

New York Supermarkets

Even a partial map of Manhattan shown online with supermarkets indicated by icons shows you too many to count on both hands. That is, we are talking of a large number of supermarkets in New York City alone. If you take the whole state into consideration, you also have to contend with a number of other metropolitan areas, such as Buffalo, New York, for example. So, what about New York Supermarkets?

Well, they have to cater to a population of nearly 10 millions – if you take neighboring areas into consideration. If you are old enough, you may recall the slogan of Naked City – where each story told was just one of a possible 9,000,000. The population within the city limits may be less now, but that doesn’t change the fact that all the people living in the various boroughs of the city, which consist of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island need to eat. We are talking about a lot of New York supermarkets just in the city alone.

The city harbors a lot of people who make plenty of money and who live in the so-called good neighborhood. But there are areas where the people are not so well off or even rather poor by the city’s standards. In those areas, some food stores may even have gone out of business in recent years, which adds to the problems the city faces. In any case, it is important for a great city like New York – perhaps the most famous city in the world – to make sure that the people who live in it have a safe source for all the foods that they need to buy and live on.

In addition to all the supermarkets, the city has been operative in it, there are also the neighborhood outlets that you may see in movies that take place in the New York City. You know, those fresh fruit and vegetable stands that have their goods displayed in front of the store on the sidewalk. Very romantic to shop that day, too. But buying food in a New York supermarket is just the beginning of the larger picture.

The larger picture also involved the many delicatessens that you find either in a New York supermarket or as an independent outlet. Moving from there, you may also consider the restaurants located throughout Manhattan or any of the city’s other boroughs. This world-class city is a veritable cornucopia of great restaurants and lots of neighborhood specialty restaurants that cater to the large ethnic populations of the city. Whether you or your family hails from Italy or Ireland – or even from Poland or Hungary – you can find stores that carry the comfort foods of the old country or restaurants that specialize in the cooking you may have grown up with.

New York supermarkets are great places in which to do your shopping. And their names are legion, too. Food Emporium, Fairway Market, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, or C-town Supermarket are just a few that may come to mind when you think of all the great supermarkets that you may find just in Manhattan – which is the part of New York City that’s perhaps the borough that gets the most attention and is the best known throughout the world.

Market Basket Supermarket

Before modern supermarkets came into being with their shopping carts that in most places you can push all the way to your car in the supermarket’s parking lot, small markets let you put your groceries is market baskets, which are still available, of course, for people who just want to pick up a couple of items and be out of there again. Today, of course, there is Market Basket Supermarket out there that actually has that name.

One of them, Demoulas, even has a Market Basket website, which can come in handy for people who use computers or other mobile devices with which they can connect with the Internet. On this particular website, you’ll find the Market Basket Weekly Circular or the Market Basket Coupons or the Market Basket Locations.

If you are a Demoulas customer, you may sign up for the Market Basket Circular and you’ll receive it every Sunday in your Inbox – this particular circular offers many advantages for Market Basket Supermarket shoppers. Sign on is easy, and it would really be a shame not to take advantage of this opportunity if you live close enough to one of these stores.

There are plenty of other places that go under the name of Market Basket Supermarket. There is the place located in Somerville, Massachusetts, for example. This particular Market Basket Supermarket has the distinct honor of having no less than 250 reviews that rate the store from the point of view of actual shoppers who base their opinions on the kinds of experiences they have had while shopping here.

The reviews – the feedback – varies from customer to customer from negative to positive assessments. And, of course, the negative ones may even show a bit of anger on the part of some dissatisfied customer here and there. It’s human nature to want to complain when something isn’t up to par. Sometimes the complaints are frivolous. One customer doesn’t like the fact that the place is crowded. Well, why would it be crowded if it weren’t a good place to shop?

The positive feedback is more reliable, if for no other reason than because it reflects the successful shopping experiences of the people who have actually done their shopping in the place and who took the trouble to write about it. What the positive feedback indicates is that Market Basket Supermarket, the one located in Somerville, MA, has all that people are looking for when they go to their neighborhood supermarket.

One customer giving feedback for the store located in Boston singles out Market Basket Supermarket for the best prices in town. The feedback also tells us that the store carries just about everything any shopper may ever want to get in a great supermarket. So while some negative things might be said about any store in the world, Market Basket Supermarket seems to do well for most people. And that’s good news for the people who own and operate these stores as well as all the people who do their shopping there for themselves and their families.

Hannaford Supermarket

The year was 1883 – yes, back in the last decades of the 19th century when Arthur Hannaford started to sell fruit and vegetables in Portland, Maine. The store is in its second hundred-year history by now – of course, quite a few years before the 200th anniversary rolls around, but already more than a century in business is nothing to sneeze at either. Hannaford Supermarket is truly an amazing place in which to do your shopping.

The products at your friendly Hannaford Supermarket include all that you may need, from produce and meat and dairy and seafood and general grocery, to bakery and deli and beverages and health and beauty supplies as well. You have a pet? There is a section for your pet’s needs in the store as well, not to speak of your baby’s needs as well as lots of meal ideas with the best nutritional value money can buy.

The company’s website also offers healthy meal ideas that you can easily fix for yourself. These include such scrumptious things as Asian flair rice or sticky coconut rice. But if you want more protein, how about the herbed salmon or the Caribbean mojo chicken. The baked bean salad or the chick pea salad are other healthy items, which also contain good proteins that are not of an animal source.

For the budget-conscious shoppers Hannaford Supermarket offers a Weekly Flyer and lots of coupons, too. When it comes to the Weekly Flyer, you may sign on for the “weekly flyer e-mail” and begin to take substantial advantage of all that this store can offer you in its bargain deals. The coupon offers change from week to week, but you can always count of real savings when you take advantage of them. The store’s website allows you to stroll through all the coupons it has to offer. And this part of the site is worth a visit frequently because Hannaford Supermarket offers new deals on their coupons over and over again as time goes by.

The Hannaford Supermarket, on average, also carries all natural and certified organic products. These items can be found in the produce section or in the fresh meat section. But there are also natural and organic products available for your health and beauty care as well as all the cleaning supplies you might wish to use to be as health-conscious as it is possible to be these days.

Hannaford Supermarket stands behind their organic offerings. These items are produced without conventional pesticides or artificial fertilizers that can become toxic in your body. Furthermore, the soil in which the produce sold in the store comes from needs to be certified to have been free of conventional pesticides for at least 36 months – and that means three years. This much time allows for the organic produce grown in such soil to be truly natural and good for you.

In short, you Hannaford Supermarket is a modern store with all the conveniences that a modern store can give you. Great choices and selections as well as money-saving ideas throughout the store, not to speak of the special areas where the bakery and the deli is located. But the store also has a pharmacy for your convenience. Whatever you need, you can find here, and you can find it in great quantities and qualities, too.

Grocery Shopping

General information about grocery shopping can give you an advantage, but there is more under this rubric than that. Still, first things first: there are a number of things you as a conscientious shopper can do to get the best-quality foods for you and your family and also to save as much money as possible. Let’s take these items one at a time:

Like most people, you probably have your favorite neighborhood supermarket where you do most of your shopping. And you are probably a relatively regular customer there – though on occasion, you may find yourself driving a bit farther to some other store for some items that your own store may not carry – some special brand, for example. In any case, do you use a list with which to do your shopping or do you rely on your memory?

The advantage to using a list is that you won’t do any last minute impulse buying. If you think through all that you need and put everything on the list, you are going to buy only what you need. Should you suddenly remember something while in the store, you can always add that, provided it’s not some silly impulse item. If you try to rely on your memory – and you are more likely to do this is you are a man – you might end up forgetting things. One way to avoid forgetting something is to go through the entire store, all the aisles, that way your memory may kick in if you were going to forget something.

So, how do you save money? Well, you can use coupons. And there are many sources for this. Offline and online. Your Sunday paper is the first line of defense. But there are online sources, too, and if you can print them, you can take them to the store with you. Your supermarket may itself give you coupons at the time you are checking out. There is no reason not to take advantage of coupons. They can add up. If you just save, say, $25 a week, that can come to an impressive $1,300 by year’s year’s end. So don’t overlook this possibility of saving on your grocery shopping.

One more bit of advice: it is not a good idea to shop on an empty stomach. Remember that you are in a food store, and when you are hungry, everything under the sun will look too good not to buy it – and that’s not the way to save money. So be prepared when you do your grocery shopping, and you are going to end up with all you need and save money in the bargain, too.

Now at the beginning of this article I had mentioned something else: there is actually a Grocery Shopping Network online, and you can access it here: groceryshopping.net – here you are going to find a whole different way of doing your grocery shopping. Over 6,000 grocery stores are represented on this site, so you can truly explore lots of possibilities here. Let’s look at just a couple of examples, shall we?

The motto of the Grocery Shopping Network is “Where the Path to Purchase Begins.” The reason for this is simple enough: even before you go to your store, you can check up on specials on your computer and get to the store armed with information that will save you money. The next thing is the personalization factor. Yes, once you frequent the site, you can get personal deals that end up saving you extra money. So do take advantage of this site if you can.

Giant Eagle Stores

The first Giant Eagle store was opened in 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The store has long been a chain, and today it has places operating in Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland in addition to its home state of Pennsylvania. Ninety years after its first store opened, the chain has been called one of the top 75 North American food stores around. Quite an achievement for humble origins.

When you open the company’s website, four interesting words – all links – indicate that here you can Cook, Entertain, Live, Save. Not a bad combination for a bit of advice about how to go on about our daily business in this day and age. So, what happens when you click on Cook? You get cooking techniques as well as cooking articles galore. Also sound advice on good nutrition and how to use up the best ingredients that you may have picked up at the store earlier in the day or the week.

The Entertain link takes you to a page that gives you what they call “grown-up dinner parties to themed seasonal gatherings.” In other words, here you can find all that you need in order to organize your next dinner party for family and friends. Birthday coming up? Or an anniversary? No problem. But the page can also give you advice on holiday eating as well. So be sure to click on “Entertain” and see what you can come up with that will be useful to you the next time you need to invite the boss, for example, to dinner.

Click on Live, and the page that opens will surprise you with all that you can gain from this page alone. Here, you are going to find such fine things as Women’s Health Guide or Gluten-Free Living or what to do if you have cholesterol issues or how to power up your diet with the most nutritious fruits and vegetables. Today, there is a lot to be done when it comes to keeping ourselves and our loved one in the best of health, and Giant Eagle Stores are in the business of, among other things, helping us to do just that.

Click on Save, and you’ll find yourself on Save More, Every Day. That is the name of the page once you are in there. And here you get a whole list of items that you can save plenty of your hard-earned money on. There are, for example, Giant Eagle grocery discounts here in plentiful supply. The Giant Eagle Store brands also offer you special savings, but you may actually get a Giant Eagle Advantage Card that may really rack up the savings for you.

Giant Eagle has fresh foods, of course, and a bakery and a deli, and a cheese shop and a large selection of beers, foreign and domestic. You name it, and you are probably going to find it. The bakery, for example, prides itself on home-style breads as well as whole-wheat breads. But here you’ll also find a great selection of cookies and muffins and pies, not to speak of such great specialties as wedding cakes, just in case you may be in the market for that particular honor.

The deli has great party trays, but also a great selection of lunch meats and deli cheeses, plus olives and antipasti and delicious deli salads. Giant Eagle Stores are, therefore, clearly a shopper’s paradise. And in this case that paradise is nowhere near lost. All the fresh fruits and vegetables you may wish to place in your shopping cart will be there every day. And all the meat and dairy products as well. So come on it and do your best to buy what you need.

Food markets are obviously supermarkets, for the most part. The world’s population is by now divided between those who live in cities and those who may still live on the land, farmers, etc. It seems that at least half of the world’s total population does it’s shopping in urban stores, which have replaced old-fashioned markets with “food markets” , that is, supermarkets that now cater to literally billions of people world-wide. One problem with this setup, as convenient as it is, is the possibility of contaminated foods leasing to mild or even serious and fatal instances of food poisoning.

WHO Initiative

The World Health Organization is one of the institutions that is responsible for food safety throughout most of the civilized world. The role of the organization is manifold. It makes it its business to disseminate information about food safety and set up norms and standards that need to be kept in mind to assure the protection of the public’s health. WHO’s constitution came into being in the year of 1948, not long after the end of World War II. It is under the auspices of the United Nations, and it sets itself the ambitious goal of providing as much input as possible to keep the world’s food safe for people.

What Else Should You Know About Food Markets?

You do your shopping, provided you live either in the United States or in Europe or in any number of Asian cities of large population, in any case, you do your shopping in some local food market or supermarket. This means that you rely on this type of store for what you and your family eats. And that’s not a simple thing. So right off the bat, you want to make sure that you have access the fresh foods, fruits and vegetables and meat and dairy products and the good from a bakery or a deli.

But you also want to know that all the food items that you purchase are safe for you to eat. There can be no 100% guarantee that contamination will never get through all the inspections. This year, in 2011, for example, we had the cantaloupe poisoning when certain shipments arrived at supermarkets with listeria. This led to 28 deaths in the United States. A shocking development. But, luckily, this sort of poisoning is rare. And it is usually followed by a recall of the offending item. In this case, the problem was owing to the fact that the incubation period of the poisoning was long, so people may have become infected long before the problem came to the attention of the food world at large.

One may in which all food markets can do their best is by assuring the way in which the food they purchase is grown under conditions that are properly handled and supervised. It is also important to make sure that the conditions under which the food items are stored and shipped are likewise, responsibly handled and properly supervised. WHO, that is, the World Health Organization , is going to be in the business of helping the world’s food markets to remain safe.
