Star Supermarket

Star Supermarket has joined Shaw’s. The latter goes back for its New England start to the 19th century – to the year 1860, to be precise. You may remember from your school days – or you may know if you are still in school (high school or college) that 1860 was the year in which President Lincoln was elected to the highest office in the land, and the year before the outbreak of the Civil War. So Shaw’s goes way back, as you might say.

The first store was opened in Portland, Maine. And the rest, if you will, is history. But there are Star Supermarkets elsewhere in the land, markets that actually carry the Star name. One of these fine stores is located in Huntsville, Alabama, and has its provenance in 1944. This particular store is a great representative of a Star Supermarket, so the rest of this article is going to deal with it and its fine offerings.

Since it’s best to traverse a supermarket by going round first and only then to venture into its middle, let us start our imagined trip through Star by going to the Produce section first. Here on the company’s website you’ll see their motto: “out fruits and vegetables are garden fresh and value priced everyday!” You can’t go wrong with that. Notice the word “garden” there. That means not agri-business with its massive production as if it were a fruit and vegetable factory. Garden implies – and rightly so – something you might pick from your grandparents’ garden when you were just a kid.

Moving on to the Meat department is just steps away. Here, the motto that greets you is: “you won’t find better tasting meat than the fresh cuts we offer, and that’s a fact!” Once again, you can’t go wrong with something like that. Here’s is also the home of Heritage Pride Premium Angus, but also the place where you will get specialty meats and cuts along with fresh or frozen seafood.

The Bakery offers breads and rolls and muffins and pies and cakes. And any other delicacy that your heart may desire. Here, you also find such specials as the 8” single layer caramel cake for just $5.99 each. If you want to pick up something sweet for the kids – or for the kid in you – you have come to the right place.

Where there is a bakery, there should be a Deli, too, right? And at Star Supermarket, you’ll surely be delighted with the Deli. Here, there is a veritable cornucopia of goodies. Great cold cuts and scrumptious cheeses, not to speak of the best roast chicken money can buy. But if the usual doesn’t appeal to you on a given day, how about trying one of their Boar’s Head Deli Trays? These come in a variety of goodies in them for your next party. Fancy a boiled shrimp tray? You can get it here in different sizes. And the same goes for, say, for the Star Market ham tray. The choices just start there.

The Wines department offers a wide variety of wines to go with your buys from either the meat or the seafood or the deli section. But if you have a hankering after pizza tonight, don’t forget Terry’s Pizza at Star. And if you are home already, don’t let that stop you. They deliver, right to your door. And you have a truly great selection here with all the classic toppings, such as Italian sausage or pepperoni, and the works, really. A great place to shop, no question about it.
